What’s Inside Each Box?

Each hobby box of 2023-24 Panini Recon Basketball contains:

  • 10 packs per box
  • 6 cards per pack
  • 2 autographs
  • 20 inserts and/or parallels

Set Overview

This set is known for its over-the-top designs and its sheer volume of cards. Here’s a breakdown of what you can expect from this brand-new set.

Base Set

The base set features 250 cards, with 50 of those being rookies, including Victor Wembanyama, Brandon Miller, Scoot Henderson, and many others. The remaining 200 cards feature everyone from current stars to future faces of the NBA.

Parallels

Of course, there are also a selection of parallels to find. Each base card in the set can also be found in 1 of 12 stunning parallels with a unique design. Some of these parallels are relatively common, but others are sporadic.

This includes the Effect Holo (numbered to /49), the Gold Holo (numbered to /10), and the Green Holo (numbered to /5). There’s also the Platinum Holo, with only 1 per each player.

Autographs

Recon wasn’t shy with the autographs this year as there are hundreds of different autographs to collect. There’s the potential for rookie jersey and patch autos, as well as autographs from some huge stars and legends, such as Steph Curry, Anthony Edwards, Carmelo Anthony, Ja Morant, Luka Doncic, and countless others.

Several types of autos include Glorified Signatures and Archetype Signatures, and various rookie-specific options, such as Rookie Recon Signatures, True Potential Signatures, and Draft Night Acetate Signatures.

Many of these autos also have rare parallels to collect. For example, Sophomore Acetate Autographs are generally numbered to 48, but there are also Gold (numbered to 10), Green (numbered to 5), and Platinum (numbered to 1) versions.

Inserts

This set also features many exciting inserts, including Fleet Feet, Future Legends, World Travellers, Vector, and others. In addition to the basic version of these inserts, many of them have parallels, such as Purple (numbered to /75), Effect (numbered to /35), Gold (numbered to /10), and Platinum (numbered to /1).

You should also look for rare case hit inserts such as Contours, Fuzion, and Gala cards. These short print chase cards are some of the most valuable and sought-after in the set, as they’re tough to find. For example, each Gala card is only numbered to /8.

Rookie Class

The 2023-24 basketball card sets’ rookie class is decently strong overall, but Victor Wembanyama, a generational talent, is definitely carrying the class. No prospect has had this much hype since Lebron James over twenty years ago.

So far, he’s lived up to it as well. He was the unanimous choice for NBA Rookie of the Year and was the first rookie to average 20 points and 10 rebounds per game since Blake Griffin back in 2010-11.

As a result, his cards are precious right now and will likely continue to grow in price over time. Outside of Wembanyama, there are a few other great players, such as Brandon Miller, Scoot Henderson, Jaime Jaquez Jr., and Dereck Lively II, in the rookie class.

While not as valuable as Wemby cards, getting a rare parallel or case hit from these rookies could net you a pretty penny. However, nearly every investor ripping packs of any 2023-24 basketball product is mainly looking for Wemby cards that could be worth a fortune if he continues to impress during his NBA career.

Best Hits and Cards to Watch For

As you could expect, many of the best hits in the set feature Victor Wembanyama. This includes his base parallels and the various inserts that feature the 7’4 French superstar. His Fuzion, Gala, and Contours case hits are particularly great to keep an eye out for.

Of course, all the chase cards like Fuzion, Gala, and Contours are great hits, no matter which player is featured. It would be best if you also were on the lookout for other great hits, including:

  • Autographs featuring stars like Steph Curry, Ja Morant, Jalen Green, Luka Doncic, and others
  • Low-numbered inserts, parallels, and autos, especially those featuring rookies or stars
  • Rookie jersey autos and Novice patch autos from the rookie class
  • Panini Calligraphy Signatures (featuring either Anthony Edwards, Carmelo Anthony, or Karl Malone)

Pricing and Current Values

You can find 2023-24 Panini Recon hobby boxes on eBay for between $200 and $300 in most cases. However, the set is very new, and prices could change as the market shifts over time.

This is relatively affordable for a hobby box in today’s market, making Panini Recon a budget-friendly way to get into the hobby. For example, a Prizm hobby box costs around three to four times as much as Recon.

As of writing this guide, this set was only released a few days ago, so there hasn’t been much time for the market to stabilize individual card values. Over time, however, it will become clearer how much certain cards are worth in the eyes of the market.

That being said, some high-value sales have taken place. As you could expect, several Wemby inserts and parallels have gone for hundreds of dollars. Some of his cards have even gone for over $1,000, including:

  • $1,675 for a Victor Wembanyama Green Holo base card parallel /5
  • $1,124 for a Victor Wembanyama Contours case hit
  • $1,111 for a Victor Wembanyama Fuzion case hit

Of course, rare case hits like Fuzion and Contours have also gone for quite a bit, including:

  • $599.99 for a Shai Gilgeous-Alexander Contours card
  • $400 for a Lebron James Fuzion card
  • $400 for an Anthony Edwards Fuzion
  • $365 for a Luka Doncic Contours card
  • $285 for a Steph Curry Contours card

Even outside of Wembanyama and chase cards, there have been some large sales, such as:

  • $499.99 for a Dereck Lively rookie jersey auto /3
  • $381.76 for a Luka Doncic Glorified Signatures auto /149
  • $350 for an Amen Thompson Rock the Rim Platinum 1/1
  • $290 for a Luka Doncic Might Gold insert /10

Because of the recent release, there aren’t any graded cards on the market yet, but look for those to appear in the coming days and weeks. While it remains to be seen what these graded cards will go for, they’re almost sure worth more than the ungraded versions.

Investment Outlook and Potential

The cards look good, and there are several solid hits to look out for. But while it could be a fun rip, Panini Recon isn’t as popular as other sets like Prizm and may not hold its value as well. A lack of on-card autos and other high-end inclusions could turn some serious investors or collectors away.

However, it doesn’t require a large investment to purchase, and there’s certainly the potential to make money, so it’s worth a try. Unlike more expensive boxes, where you need a premium hit to break even in many cases, cheaper boxes like Recon are more forgiving if you only get moderate hits.

Also, Wembanyama cards in hobby boxes should keep wax relatively desirable over time. That being said, several non-Wemby singles are currently going for around what a box costs or more, so there’s a chance to make your money back and then some, even if you don’t hit on a Wembanyama.

Many cards from the set currently up on eBay have dozens of bids and plenty of watchers, showing at least some interest in the product. Once cards from the set begin to get graded, the investment potential should also increase going forward.

Final Thoughts

2023-24 Panini Recon Basketball is an enjoyable set to open thanks to its various hits, unique and eye-catching designs, and the sheer volume of interesting inserts and parallels. While it’s not as popular or beloved as some other Panini products, there are valuable cards to be found, especially if you pull a Wemby or one of the many case hits.

We hope this guide has helped you learn more about the set, its pricing, and the types of cards it offers.
