A favorite among collectors for the past few years, Clearly Donruss Football shares a similar card design to the flagship Donruss Football set but trades out the basic card stock for a more premium acetate feel.

As of this writing, the 2023 iteration of the set was just released a few days ago and is full of interesting autographs, inserts, and parallels to collect.

This guide will look closer at the set, the cards to look for, early card values, and so much more.

What’s Inside Each Box?

Each hobby box of 2023 Clearly Donruss Football contains:

  • 4 packs per box
  • 5 cards per pack
  • 1 autograph
  • 1 insert
  • 2 parallels
  • 8 base Rated Rookie cards
  • 8 additional base cards

Set Overview

This set features a collection of premium cards with unique and good-looking designs. Here’s a closer look at the kinds of cards you can find when you rip a box.

Base set

The 2023 Clearly Donruss Football base set consists of 100 cards, with 50 veterans and the others rookies. This is a relatively small base set compared to others, often double or triple the size.

Autographs

2023 Cleary Donruss Football also has a collection of autographs to collect. These range from Rated Rookie autos featuring the best of the rookie class, to autographs from today’s biggest stars, to autographs from legends that played multiple decades ago. Some of these are relatively common, while others are numbered to /25 or lower.

Inserts

There are also a variety of fun and uniquely designed inserts to search for in the set. This includes Champions, Clearly Highlights, Clearly My House, Retro inserts, Gridiron Marvels, and more.

While plenty of them are popular, the crown jewel is the Downtown case hit inserts, which seem to be among the most popular Donruss Football cards each year.

Parallels

The base set, autographs, and inserts also have a selection of parallels in a variety of colors to chase. This ranges from relatively common parallels like Blue (numbered to /99) and Orange (numbered to /75), to lower printed ones like Green (numbered to /25) and Black (numbered to /10).

If you’re lucky, you could even find incredibly rare 1/1 parallels like Black Spider and Platinum Holo.

Release Date

This set was released on May 24th, 2024.

Pricing

You can generally find hobby boxes of 2023 Clearly Donruss Football on eBay for between $250 and $300. Other online card stores have them for around the same, if not a little bit higher.

Rookies to Watch For

While there are plenty of great players in every football set, the rookies often get most of the attention. The good news is that the 2023 NFL rookie class has proven to be incredibly stacked with talent.

The class is led by quarterback C.J. Stroud, who not only became the youngest starting QB to win a playoff game, but also set the record for the most passing yards in a single game by a rookie, with 470 in a game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Other quarterbacks like Anthony Richardson, Bryce Young, and Will Levis are also essential to keep an eye out for when opening packs. While Richardson suffered an injury and Young and Levis struggled at times during their rookie seasons, they still have a ton of potential and could develop into incredible players.

But in addition to these QBs, there are several other offensive stars in the making to look for. This includes running backs like Jahmyr Gibbs, Bijan Robinson, and De’Von Achane, who all had impressive rookie campaigns. Each of them already looks to be among the best RBs in the league, despite their young age and limited NFL experience.

There are several noteworthy wide receivers and tight ends you’d love to pull cards from as well, including Zay Flowers, Puka Nacua, Jaxon Smith-Njigba, Jordan Addison, Rashee Rice, Tank Dell, Sam Laporta, Dalton Kincaid, and plenty of others.

Even on the defensive side of the ball, players like Will Anderson Jr., Christian Gonzalez, and Kobie Turner have proven to be great for their teams so far and should only keep improving.

If all or any of these players continue to play well in the coming years, their rookie cards should only become more and more valuable.

Of course, some rookies take a year or two to adjust to the NFL, so some relatively cheap cards from this set may become much more valuable if players come out of nowhere to become superstars.

Best Hits in the Set

There are several cards in the set that are particularly sought-after. First of all, rookie cards always prove to be a hot commodity, including any autographs, numbered cards, parallels, or inserts that you can find. In particular, look for cards from any players mentioned in the last section.

Downtown insert case hits, especially the ultra-rare Platinum Holo 1/1 versions, are also some of the best cards to chase in the entire set. While all Downtown inserts are popular, ones featuring popular players like Patrick Mahomes, Peyton Manning, C.J. Stroud, and others are sure to fetch some of the highest prices in the entire set.

Of course, low-numbered cards and rare parallels are always huge hits in the sports card world, as are autographs from rookies or other great players like Brock Purdy, Justin Jefferson, Justin Herbert, and Aaron Rodgers. You can also find autos from legendary stars like Emmitt Smith, Ed Reed, and Eddie George.

Card Values

Despite the set just being released recently, there have already been some sales and completed auctions taking place. As a result, we can get a glimpse of some of the early card values. Here are a look at some of the sales so far:

  • $475 for a C.J. Stroud, Bryce Young, and Anthony Richardson Rated Rookie card
  • $327 for a Michael Irvin Downtown insert
  • $269 for a Kendre Miller Black Spider Rated Rookie card 1/1
  • $249.99 for a Jahmyr Gibbs Purple Rated Rookie auto /175

Several other cards were listed for hundreds of dollars and had their “Best Offer” accepted and likely fetched a fair amount, though we can’t see the exact amount they were sold for.

There are also several highly-priced auctions in progress as of the writing of this guide. Some examples of this include:

  • $1,125 with 23 bids and over a day remaining for a C.J. Stroud Downtown insert
  • $1,025 with 35 bids and a few hours remaining for a C.J. Stroud Night Moves insert
  • $711 with 19 bids and over two days remaining for an Aaron Rodgers Downtown insert
  • $290 with 17 bids and over two days remaining for a Bo Jackson Downtown insert

As more cards are pulled and put up for sale/auction, a market will begin to develop, and we’ll have a better idea of the set’s card values over time. But early on, it seems promising, and the high number of bids and watchers on several sales and auctions shows that plenty of people are interested in either collecting or investing in the set.

Also, it’ll be interesting to see how the prices change as graded cards eventually make their way onto sites like eBay, as getting a PSA 10 or even a PSA 9 can, in some cases, dramatically increase the value of cards.

Investment Potential

In the past, several cards from Clearly Donruss Football sets have sold for thousands of dollars, and sealed boxes continue to hold their value decently well. We expect the 2023 version of the set to be no different.

It’s helped by a very strong rookie class, highlighted by several players that we could easily see going on to become some of the best at their position in the entire NFL. So not only will these individual rookie cards likely sell well over time, but the possibility of pulling one of those cards should also keep the sealed wax valuable.

Of course, while rookies take the spotlight, there are other rare cards to collect featuring huge names like Patrick Mahomes, Jerry Rice, Peyton Manning, Lamar Jackson, Joe Burrow, and countless others.

Also, the fact that many people prefer the premium feel of these cards compared to the basic flagship Donruss versions should bode well for the future of this set.

Final Thoughts

With its premium feel and collection of different autos, inserts, and rookie cards to pull, 2023 Clearly Donruss Football should be a solid set for both collectors and investors.

It’s still a new set, but there have already been many exciting pulls, and the impressive checklist assures us that there are certainly more to come.

We hope this guide helped you learn more about this set, its early card values, and the cards you could see if you open a box.
