Base set

The base set totals 300 cards, 200 of which are NFL veterans and 100 Rated Rookie cards. The cards feature C.J. Stroud, Anthony Richardson, Bryce Young, Bijan Robinson, and many others.

Parallels

The base set also features a variety of parallel cards. These parallels feature different colors, patterns, and design changes. Some will be present in most boxes, while others will be much rarer and more valuable. There are also parallels for the autographs and inserts in the set.

Autographs

The set will also contain numerous autograph cards. There will be rookie autographs, rookie patch autographs, and some autos and patches to chase from some of the NFL’s biggest stars and legends.

Inserts

Donruss Optic will have a couple of vibrant inserts in the set to watch for. These include Rookie Kings, My House!, and Mythical. But the crown jewel of them all is the Downtown inserts. These case hits feature unique and eye-catching artwork and are popular every year. We don’t see 2023 being any different.

Most of the highest-selling cards from Donruss Optic sets in past years were Downtown inserts, so this is undoubtedly a card investors and collectors alike would love to have.

Release Date

The release date for 2023 Donruss Optic Football hobby boxes is June 26th, 2024. Of course, this is the anticipated release, and things could always get pushed back or moved up.

But while the hobby box will not be released for a while, some retail blasters have been released in the last week or so at Walmart and Target, giving a glimpse of what the set looks like.

Pricing

The hobby box hasn’t been released yet, but there are plenty of listings on eBay from sellers who will ship boxes as soon as they’re released. These are generally listed for between $800 and $1,000. Other online card stores charge around the same. Of course, prices could certainly change between now and the full release of the set.

Retail blasters currently go for around $30 in-store at Walmart and Target, but they sell out quickly once they get restocked. You can also get them on eBay for between $50 and $60 in most cases.

Rookie Class

The 2023-24 NFL rookie class was a strong one, highlighted by the first 4 quarterbacks taken. While Bryce Young struggled a bit in his debut season with a poor team, and Anthony Richardson got hurt early in the season, both C.J. Stroud and Will Levis were quite impressive during their rookie seasons.

In particular, Stroud was incredible and was named the NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year, with 48 out of 50 first-place votes. He became one of only a few quarterbacks to throw for over 4,000 yards in his rookie season and also led the Texans to a playoff victory.

Outside of these quarterbacks, several other offensive rookies looked fantastic in their first seasons. This includes running backs like Bijan Robinson, Jahmyr Gibbs, and De’Von Achane, who all look like future superstars.

The wide receiver class is also strong, with names like Puka Nacua, Zay Flowers, Jordan Addison, and Jaxon Smith-Njigba making headlines for their play all season long. Some rookie tight ends, like Sam Laporta and Dalton Kincaid, had great rookie seasons, which you don’t see very often at that position.

Will Anderson Jr., Jalen Carter, Devon Witherspoon, Kobie Turner, Christian Gonzalez, and others dominate the defensive side of the ball.

Of course, players who were under the radar in their rookie season could always blow up later on in their careers and cause their cards to skyrocket.

Cards to Look for

While the set isn’t entirely out yet, there are some cards that are likely to be amongst the most sought-after hits in the set. First of all, rookie cards from the biggest names in this draft class, like C.J. Stroud, Anthony Richardson, and Bijan Robinson, are sure to be ones to look out for.

This especially goes for their numbered parallels and any inserts featuring them.

You’ll also want to watch out for autograph cards, especially from stars, legends, or rookies. On-card autographs are generally a hot commodity in the sports card investing and collecting world, so the Rated Rookie RPS autographs should be famous and fetch a solid amount.

Low-numbered parallels are always a hit in the sports card world, and rare case hits like the Downtown inserts are something you’d love to get your hands on, too.

Early Values

As we mentioned earlier, retail blaster boxes have been out for a little over a week as of writing this guide, which is still well over a month before hobby boxes are set to come out. As a result, some cards have found their way onto eBay and have already sold for quite a bit.

Here are a few of the most valuable cards that have come out of these retail blaster boxes so far:

  • $1,999.99 for a Patrick Mahomes Super Bowl Downtown insert
  • $1,302.58 for an Anthony Richardson Downtown insert
  • $1,000 for a Will Levis Downtown insert
  • $999.98 for a Bijan Robinson Downtown insert
  • $999 for a Bryce Young Downtown insert

Plenty of cards listed for well over $1,000 were sold for a “Best Offer” that we imagine would be at least a few hundred, if not more.

While these are all impressive numbers, keep in mind that these are the first few major sales, and the market could change and adapt as more retail blasters are opened and once the hobby boxes are released at the end of June.

However, these types of cards (rookie and superstar case hit inserts), as well as low-numbered parallels and autos, are likely to continue to be worth a pretty penny even after the full release.

Plenty of rare cards haven’t been pulled and/or found their way onto auction yet, so it’ll be exciting to see what those end up going for.

Investment Outlook

Donruss Optic is a popular football set, and previous versions seem to hold value well, both in terms of singles and sealed wax. As a result, there’s no reason to think that the 2023 iteration will be any different.

In addition to the set itself being a favorite amongst football fans, the 2023 version benefits from a strong rookie class, especially on the offensive side of the ball. While some rookie classes have a few solid offensive players, last years’ rookie class was loaded and included multiple great players at the QB, RB, WR, and TE positions.

If these players continue to improve, there could be plenty of worthwhile hits in this set that we could easily see growing in value over time. In addition to the rookies, there are several other non-rookie cards too, including everything from stars like Patrick Mahomes, to legends like Bo Jackson.

Final Thoughts

2023 Donruss Optic Football will likely go down as one of the most popular football sets this year once again and it is sure to be a fun set to rip with so many different cards to chase and collect. It’ll be interesting to see where the market goes once the full set is out, but this is likely to be a solid set for investing this year and beyond.

We hope this guide has helped you learn more about the set and the kind of cards you can expect to find in it.
